Does Nikon D5600 has a better autofocus than D5500 when shooting videos?
Dec 19, 2016
First, I have to claim I don't have a DSLR, and I am going to buy a first one in my life. I ddi a lot of search on the web, and finally narrows down to nikon D5500. But there is one problem: many discussions pointed out that autofocus in video shooting sucks with D5500. For me, I think I probably will shoot videos when a got a DSLR and this makes me hesitated.
Now there is new D5600. According to the product info page of Nikon website, I didn't see any exciting difference that will make me spending more money on it. But I just saw this product comparing site https://versus.com/en/nikon-d5500-vs-nikon-d5600 . On this page, it pointed out two difference that I didn't see in other place:
- D5600 has FASTER VIDEO AUTOFOCUS DUE TO A PHASE DETECTION AUTOFOCUS WHEN SHOOTING MOVIES
- D5600 support more lenses
I am skeptical about these. Does D5600 really have a better autofocus than D5500 in video shooting?

That is a mistake on that website. both use contrast detect for live view/video.
I dont think the D5600 has any significant difference in that regard

I think the only difference is that the D5600 ships with the AF-P lens which does focus about twice as fast in Liveview mode according to http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/nikon-d3400/nikon-d3400A6.HTM

Don't get Nikon if you want to shoot video

Nikon's Auto focus during video is TERRIBLE. it's unusable.
Get a Canon T6i or T6s, or 80D if you want good auto focus for shooting video.
Canon's dual pixel AF is a game changer.

I have a new Nikon D5600 and the OVF is perfect in low light but in Live View Mode I couldn't get any focus where the Canon easily ate the Nikon for breakfast even almost dark condition. I have the new AF-P 18-55 kit lens. What shall I do? Can somebody recommend some settings in Live View Mode? This is a big disappointment because I cannot use it. In that case how can I make night photos? Any suggestion is appreciated. Thanks.

I have to agree with this. The video autofocus on the D5600 is embarrassing. Tonight I recorded an unboxing video in bird's eye view on a white background and 80% of the footage is unusable because it is completely out of focus.
I think it's a great camera for still images but the video is a joke. For now, I'll have to set the camera to manual focus or AF-S but am already thinking about what my next camera will be so I can record video with some confidence in the AF.

Agreed about Nikon live view and autofocus in video. Just very mediocre. The P lenses on the newer models make the experience somewhat better, but still not comparable with even the lower end dual pixel equipped Canons in live view or for video auto focusing. My D5500 was great for stills and actually ok for "easy" video, but fell short too often on more challenging videos.
The P lenses work better, but my wife's SL2 canon outdid my Nikon easily. If still pics take priority, stay with Nikon and acquire P lenses for a better live view and video compromise.
If video is important go for a T7i or higher. The advantage of the Canons is that you do not have to have so much regard to the lens you attach to them when you want a broad range of focusing options.
Canon has some reasonably priced general purpose STM lenses with quite good auto focusing and pic quality characteristics with the right body.
You have no idea how hard it is for me to dis Nikon. In an ideal world Nikon would bring itself into modern times and give us a nice affordable family camera with competitive autofocussing capabilities. Fingers crossed.

All the DX Nikons and the FX use a separate AF sensor for their photo AF. The on sensor AF for live view however, is not that speedy and really hunts when shooting video or using live view for AF. If you must use live view for your videos, manual focus will be much faster and more reliable. OR, use the touch screen AF as the touch screen is much better than using the 1/2 press AF or AF/AE lock button.

I have a Nikon D7500 and I know that AF for Live Video is very much unuseable. However, most pros shoot on manual focus and in manual focus, your D5600 delivers very good video.

Agree. I use AF-S and touch screen focus when taking video. It works very well especially with AFP lens.
PS. I have a D5600. It should also work with D5500.
